introduction

What characterizes a high-end phone tailored to power users, which ideally is also affordable? Asus likes to show it to us with the Zenfone 6 and it doesn’t hurt that after all the practical considerations the phone has a super cool rotating camera.

It’s a dual-camera assembly mounted on a motorized rig that rotates 180 degrees to take selfies — Asus unimaginatively dubbed it the Flip Camera. The actual modules are a Quad Bayer 48MP Primary and a 13MP Ultra Wide – so no telephoto lens. But on the flip side (ahem…) you get first-camera quality selfies, ultrawide too, plus some of the highest-quality selfie videos out there.

The display seems to be the only compromise in the spec sheet – in a segment dominated by OLEDs, the Zenfone 6 comes with an LCD. However, LCDs aren’t inherently bad, and we’ll see how this fares.

Performance is key for power users, so the Snapdragon 855 is in charge of things. These folks also have large collections of whatever, so Asus made sure to include a dedicated microSD slot. And since they’re always on the go with their phones, the 6 has one of the largest batteries ever at 5,000mAh.

There are certain things that you won’t find on the Zenfone 6 for one reason or another. Wireless charging, for example, would have pushed an already less slim phone into “too thick” territory, while proprietary super-fast charging technology like that of Oppo or Huawei would have meant a smaller battery, or yet another increase in thickness. And then the lack of an IP rating is no surprise given the moving parts, but even the totally static and more expensive OnePlus 7 Pro isn’t officially IP rated either.

Granted, next thing is the definition of nitpicking, but wouldn’t it have been great if the Zenfone 6 had an infrared emitter? I’m sure some power users can come up with uses for it.

Unpack Asus Zenfone 6

The Zenfone 6 comes in a large black box with a glowing outline of the phone at the top and a large “6” inside. Asus has stamped the “Flip Camera” logo on one of the sides, along with the brand logo and “Zenfone 6” lettering.

After removing the lid, you’ll be greeted by a gray cardboard sleeve with another instance of the “Flip Camera” logo. Inside the case you’ll find a clear hard plastic protective case with just the right cutouts to allow the camera to rotate freely.

Underneath is the phone itself and after dispensing with another layer of cardboard, the accessories emerge. You’d get a QuickCharge 4 adapter, which is a fairly chunky device rated at 9V/2A and 5V/2A. It has a USB-A output and a matching USB-A-to-C cable. Additionally, Asus bundles a set of in-ear headphones and a handful of different attachments.
