introduction

Sony has once again completely revamped its Xperia series, and this year the common denominator is the cinema screen. Every new Xperia smartphone gets a 21:9 panel for an immersive viewing experience, but the Xperia 1 is something special. It’s the rebirth of the Xperia Premium with a large 6.5-inch OLED 4K HDR display and today we’re going to get to know it better.

The only manufacturer to consistently ship 4K screens on the go, Sony has really outdone themselves with the Xperia 1. The Xperia 1 has a really big 6.5″ OLED with 21:9 aspect ratio, 4K resolution, HDR and BT.2020 color space support and no pixels have been left behind as there are no cut-outs on the screen. And it still managed to be a technological marvel Sony managed to keep the bezels impressively thin, which is another achievement.

But the Xperia 1 doesn’t just excel in the display department. Sony has thrown in the latest Snapdragon 855 chip, all the connectivity options you could possibly need and a very interesting triple camera setup. Sure, we’ve seen plenty of such wide-angle/ultra/telephoto combos elsewhere, but Sony brings in some advanced features like Dual Pixel Eye AF and HDR video capture to outperform the competition. Let’s hope these go down well.

And before we list all the important specs, we have to say that the Xperia 1 is also a head turner – a very slim and stylish smartphone. It’s also dust and water resistant, not that we expected anything less from the manufacturer who would have made water resistance a must in any flagship.

We have to admit that we’re not big fans of the 8-megapixel selfie shooters that Sony insists on using. Sure, they’ve always turned out to be pretty good, but the competition is way ahead of Sony in the selfie race, and it’s high time the Japanese company redirected some effort to selfie photography in its flagships.

Unmissable is the 3,300mAh battery, which seems a bit underwhelming for such a demanding and large screen, but we’ve yet to see how it will perform in our battery test. Sony is known to have a laundry list of battery modes and technologies, so it can offer plenty of autonomy too.

Unboxing the Sony Xperia 1

The Xperia 1 has a fairly large retail box, noticeably larger than the phone itself. It doesn’t contain a huge Xperia, however, but rather a surprisingly compact and comfortable-to-use smartphone. The high aspect ratio really makes a difference in handling.

The retail package has all the necessities but with a few twists. There’s a USB PD charger rated at 18W, and you get a USB-C-to-C cable to charge and plug in – both a first for Sony in a Sony retail box.

Then you will also find a pair of in-ear headphones ending on a 3.5mm plug and a separate adapter to USB-C. The Xperia 1 does not have an audio jack, so the headset would always require the use of the adapter.
