(Pocket-lint) – Snap, the company that owns Snapchat, has long considered itself a ‘camera’ company first. Finally, the first screen you see when you open Snapchat is the camera. And the Spectacles smart glasses are all about helping wearers create and share snaps (aka videos) more seamlessly. Now, Snap is taking its camera know-how to the next level, introducing a flying camera.
What is SnapPixy?
Simply put, Pixy is Snap’s first drone. It’s a small yellow UAV that can rest in the palm of your hand. In fact, it takes off and lands on your hand. It can follow you and record videos that are sent to Snapchat. Small and light enough to fit in your pocket, it uses six pre-programmed flight patterns that you can set via a dial on the top of the device.

Currently, most drones are large, heavy, and noisy devices for professionals and early adopters. Some even require permission to use. But Pixy is different because it’s portable and has quieter propellers. It weighs just 101 grams and has a removable battery that gives you five to eight flights on a full charge, which can last between around 10 and 20 seconds.
Note: Because the device is so light, you probably shouldn’t use it in windy conditions.

The Pixy’s 12-megapixel sensor captures up to 100 videos or 1,000 photos. Your media is stored locally on a 16GB drive. Early reviews suggest the video quality isn’t great, but good enough to watch on a phone.
Accesories
You can purchase additional batteries for Pixy, each costing $20. Snap also sells a dual-battery portable charger for $50, as well as a bumper and carry strap.
How does Snap Pixy work?
As mentioned, Pixy takes off and lands in the palm of your hand, but it uses flight patterns that you set with a dial on top of the device. It can give you up to eight flights that are 20 seconds long, at the high-end. It can follow you and capture footage that wirelessly syncs to Snapchat’s Memories section. It doesn’t record audio, but Snap lets you add songs it’s licensed from music labels. Then you can share your videos directly in the app or elsewhere. Snap also has Pixy-specific AR effects available. An auto-crop feature also lets you quickly convert horizontal footage to Snap’s traditional vertical orientation.

Is Snap Pixy waterproof?
no Don’t fly Pixy over water. Pixy and its accessories are not waterproof. Snap said they shouldn’t be exposed to “rain, snow, or submerged in water.”
