Google Pixel 3 review

introduction

We’re bringing the tiny pixel into the now with a tall display and less wasted space. This year’s Google Pixel 3. Updated glass construction and a couple of selfie cameras mark the other major changes compared to the 2017 vintage.

As Google’s hardware vehicle for Google’s own software, the Pixel 3 features the latest Pie OS, the all-powerful Assistant and a main camera that uses machine learning and math to make up for the lacking specs – a true second module.

Google’s aversion to the spec race continues and the Pixel 3 is one of the few top-end phones that comes with just 4GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage is the max for some current models. No memory card slot either – instead it gives you unlimited cloud storage for a couple of years. Neat, but not quite the same, we reckon.

The Snapdragon 845 goes without saying, and as with RAM, Google is taking a conservative approach – clock speeds are lower than competing models. So be it.

The slight increase in battery capacity to accommodate the screen size is of course welcome, as is Google’s continued effort to adopt and promote Power Delivery as the universal charging standard to rule them all. The addition of wireless charging, now that the glass back allows it, is a nice development too.

Sure, computer assisted photography is cool and all, but wouldn’t it have been nice if maybe there was a real telephoto camera? Yes, that would have been it. Google probably knows better too, but we’d all have been happier with 6GB of RAM – if not for future-proofing, then at least for looking good alongside the competition. Another of our usual complaints is dealt with in the box, so to speak.

Google Pixel 3 unboxing

That would be the lack of a 3.5mm jack. To make you feel better about the lack of a port, the Pixel 3 comes with a pair of USB-C Pixel earbuds, a nice addition given the lack of a headset in the previous two generations.

You can only reach them after removing several layers from inside the plain white cardboard, which is unmistakably Google’s. Remove the cover and the phone greets you from its tray. Below that, a sleeve holds the documentation and SIM pin, and covers another compartment where the Pixel earbuds live.

Getting that out of the way will reveal even more stuff. There’s a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter and a USB-C to A adapter in their own common compartment, along with a USB-C to C cable. Another dedicated case houses the charger – a Power Delivery unit rated at 5V/3A and 9V/2A. Mind you, the cloth case isn’t included – you’ll need to purchase that separately.

Okay, after considering all the peripherals, let’s focus on the phone itself.
