No new Titanfall games are in development, Respawn confirms

If the success of Apex Legends has raised your hopes for Titanfall 3, then let us disappoint you gently: there are currently no Titanfall games in development at all.

That’s the word from Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella, who told IGN during an interview marking the development studio’s tenth anniversary that “there’s nothing in development at this time.”

“But it’s always there,” he added. “You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection. I’ll see if I can do that.”

The lack of plans for Titanfall 3 shouldn’t come as a complete surprise – earlier last year Respawn admitted the game wasn’t in the works – but both Zampella and EA boss Andrew Wilson had announced a new “premium” game, Titanfall Universe, which should start sometime in the last year. It sounds like the game isn’t on the road anymore.

Titanfall and Titanfall 2 were the games that made Respawn a household name in the industry, but neither achieved commercial success worthy of its critical acclaim. That changed for the studio with last year’s double whammy of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, both of which have proven to be huge hits.

“If you look backwards [2019], it’s crazier than it was then,” Zampella said. “When you see it all as a package, it’s like, ‘Holy shit!’ but back then we just did what we do. We have a lot of people who love making games and love what they do, and they did.”

As for respawn is Zampella admitted the Jedi: Fallen Order team is hiring and teased a sequel to the Star Wars action game. Respawn is also working on the VR title Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, and Zampella teased that there may be more announcements at EA Play next month.

The blow to the Titanfall franchise comes just weeks after two former Respawn developers, Jon Shiring and Drew McCoy, launched a new AAA studio: Gravity Well. It’s unknown what they’re working on, but their combined FPS pedigree (including the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare) suggests this could be the studio to look out for the next FPS, the changed the game in much the same way as the first Titanfall did.
