introduction

Mobile gaming is not going away anytime soon. It has grown in popularity in recent years and is thriving alongside the smartphone revolution. App stores provide game developers with an accessible and convenient distribution channel, and game graphics are becoming increasingly “console-like” with each new chipset iteration.

With that in mind, we’re stunned by the almost total lack of dedicated mobile gaming hardware in 2019. It’s really bewildering when you think about it – the raw performance is there, as are the increasingly complex and engaging mobile games, but most mobile players have to be content with on-screen controls and various other limitations.

Not so long ago, the mobile gaming scene was packed with devices. Monumentally influential products like the GameBoy, Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, and many others all competed for the same niche that smartphones (apart from Nintendo Switch) currently seem to have succumbed to. And indeed, the phone you already have could be all the hardware you need to put in countless hours of enjoyable gaming.

Even if that is the case, the emptiness of the portable gaming handheld remains an undeniable fact. We haven’t abandoned the concept of physical controls and their clear utility in gaming. Otherwise, we’d all be swiping on touchscreen PS4 and Xbox controllers right now. So why isn’t anyone slapping some good knobs and some analog sticks on an Android device? Is there a practical reason we’re not seeing an entire ecosystem of devices like this?

These are some of the questions we approached the MOQI i7s with as it’s an exception to the rule – an Android platform wrapped in a gaming shell of its own.

In fairness, the MOQI i7s isn’t the only survivor in the Android handheld space. There are others, but few and very far apart. But the Moqi i7s stands out in this small crowd as one of the best-equipped and most powerful Android handheld consoles out there. We thought that alone makes it a good starting point for our exploration of why Android portable consoles don’t matter in 2019.

unpacking

The very first thing that struck us about the MOQI i7s was how premium and tasteful the packaging is. This doesn’t necessarily refer to the actual product itself, of course, but it’s still a nice indication of the attention and RnD that went into the handheld.

The retail package consists of the device itself, housed in a convenient plastic cradle (plenty of protection for the long journey from China), accompanied by a quality USB Type-A to Type-C data and charging cable. We were also pleased to find a charger inside. Not only that, but a sleek black fast charger that feels premium and perfectly capable of putting out 18W.

Another nice little bonus thrown in the box is a second glass screen protector. Again, a valued addition as its shape is so irregular you’re unlikely to find a replacement. And yes, it’s a second device, as one was already mounted on the device – a little wispy around the edges but still there – we appreciate those little touches.

A case really would have made for a perfect 10/10 rating in the bundle category as the handset is made entirely of plastic and would benefit from the added protection.

As for the tasteful styling mentioned earlier, the box comes with a very pleasing black soft-touch coating and a single subtle snail logo. When we saw that a snail doesn’t naturally fit on a gaming device, we took a look and it turns out that MOQI isn’t the brand here, it’s a device name. The company behind the MOQI i7s is Snail Digital (Suzhou Snail Digital Technology Co., Ltd.). It’s a fairly reputable Chinese company that started developing the country’s first own 3D online game in 2000 and then produced a few other games for both PC and mobile devices. It has a mobile operator (Snail Mobile) in its ranks and even a US office. Long story short, that’s where the cute little snail logo comes from.
