As if swimming in Animal Crossing: New Horizons wasn’t enough, on July 30th, 2020 the game will receive another free summer update (Vol.2) that will include three major new gameplay elements: fireworks shows, dreams and an island backup and recovery service for Nintendo Switch Online users. Tom Nook is shaking.

Summer is far from over on your island as you can attend a grand fireworks display every Sunday in August at 7pm. That same evening, seedy art dealer Redd holds his own raffle, in which villagers can trade bells for festive prizes. In addition, fireworks can also be personalized by players via the Custom Design Maker.

Sleeping in Animal Crossing: New Horizons has also become a lot more interesting, as there is now the possibility of “dreaming” when you lay down in your bed at home. This allows you to meet Luna, a mysterious otherworldly villager who offers visits to other islands as a dream for you to then explore.

If you have Nintendo Online, you can even upload your own island to share with others in their dreams. Doing this will give you a “Dream Address” that players can exchange to visit each other while they doze off. Any activities you do on an island while dreaming are not permanent – so you can chop down as many trees as you like.

Cloud saves are a feature that users have been dying to see since the game launched in March (including this author in my Animal Crossing: New Horizons review). While the new island backup service isn’t exactly that, AC players can restore their saved data in the event their Nintendo Switch is lost, damaged, or stolen.

If you’re dying to play your island on multiple Switch devices (e.g. switching back and forth between a Switch Lite and the main console), you won’t be able to do that with this new update. But all hope isn’t lost, as Nintendo has confirmed that it’s working on a feature to move save data between consoles specifically for Animal Crossing, which is set to release later this year.

But the free updates don’t stop there! Nintendo has also announced that a third is on the way in the fall – leading us to suspect it could also be related to the season. Maybe something Halloween or Thanksgiving themed? Or the long-awaited cloud saves? We keep our weed crossed!

While you wait for the update, you can check out our New Horizons guides on how to grow money trees, build a tarantula island, and mine iron nuggets. You can also find out why such games are beneficial for anyone suffering from isolation anxiety.
