While Twitch is all about streaming live content, sometimes you might want to download your own highlights or full broadcasts for YouTube compilations (or just for memory – we’re not the ones to judge).

How to enable these options in your Twitch settings with step-by-step screenshots. For more Twitch tips, check out our guide to starting streaming, hosting someone on Twitch, starting a Twitch Watch Party, and streaming straight from your Nintendo Switch.

Download your own Twitch shows and highlights

If you want to track your own streams – for example to create YouTube compilations – you must first save your past Twitch broadcasts. Once you’ve logged into your Twitch account, here’s what you need to do.

  • Go to the top right corner and select “Settings” from the drop down menu

  • Click the Channel & Videos tab.

  • Turn on “Save past shows”.

This option automatically saves your streams to your channel for 14 days if you’re just starting out on Twitch or are a Twitch Affiliate. If you are a Twitch Affiliate, Turbo or Prime user, this will be saved for 60 days.

After that, you can download your own Twitch videos as follows:

  • Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select “Video Producer” to go to your past saves

  • Click on the three dots next to the video you want and select “Download”.

You can also trim videos directly in Twitch if you only want to download part of the video and not the whole. To do this, click Highlight, edit the desired segment, and then click Publish.

Once uploaded, you can download it straight to your PC and delete the highlight from your channel if you don’t want it to appear among your publicly listed videos.

The other way to save your past shows is to record them locally on your computer. OBS actually offers a record button right next to the stream button, so you can click both when going live.

Note that OBS automatically exports videos to MKV files, which are not compatible with Adobe video editing software, so you may need to convert them to a different file type.

Other broadcasting software with recording capabilities are Streamlabs and XSplit.

How to download other people’s streams

Twitch does not currently offer a way to download the streamer’s own content within the platform. If you want to do this, you’ll need to ask the streamer if they can send you their own personal downloads or download their videos through a third-party software.

Twitch Leecher is an easy-to-use software for this and is recommended by many users and I have also tested it. Download the file and install it on your PC. Then start the application. To download a specific highlight or video, you can either enter a channel name and date, enter a URL, or enter a video ID (which can be found in the URL).

Please note that you should always get the streamer’s permission before downloading anything and ask again if you want to upload the videos (maybe if you are a mod and want to manage a YouTube channel). Do not download content from people without their prior knowledge.
