The ROG Phone 3 has been officially unveiled by Asus, but with more leaks than one sinking ship leading up to the event, it’s no real surprise. Still, Asus aims to offer the most capable gaming smartphone out there in 2020, with powerful internals, gaming-specific hardware, a huge battery and a range of accessories that further expand functionality, but UK fans may be in for a bit of disappointment.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Asus ROG Phone 3, from release date and pricing to UK availability and key new features of Asus’ latest gaming-focused smartphone.

Is the Asus ROG Phone 3 coming to the UK?

Although you could buy the Asus ROG Phone 2 in the UK, the ROG Phone 3 may not be released in the UK.

During the ROG Phone 3 launch stream, there was no mention of pricing or UK availability, suggesting the gaming market is either not big enough or, more likely, too competitive for the relatively expensive ROG Phone – particularly , if you can get likes of the Red Magic 5G, complete with the same 144Hz refresh rate of the ROG Phone 3, for just £539.

We’re awaiting confirmation from Asus and will update this section once we know more.

Don’t be too disappointed – there are plenty of other great gaming phones in the UK to choose from.

When will the Asus ROG Phone 3 be released?

While the ROG Phone 3 was revealed today, July 22, 2020, Asus didn’t mention the release date during the reveal’s livestream. Last year’s ROG Phone 2 wasn’t released until September 2019, which means we might have to wait until September 2020 for the ROG Phone 3 to finally go on sale.

How much does the ROG Phone 3 cost?

The Asus ROG Phone 3 has an RRP of €999 (around £897) for the 12GB/512GB combo and €1099 (around £987) for the 12GB/512GB variant and lies in line with flagship smartphones from Apple and Samsung. It’s also more expensive than competing gaming smartphones like the Black Shark 3 (£539/$599) and Red Magic 5G (£539/$579).

There is also a more budget-friendly option. Dubbed the ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition, the smartphone packs a Snapdragon 865 along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and costs a more tempting €799 (about £718).

What’s new in ROG Phone 3?

The Asus ROG Phone 3 might not look too different on the surface, with the same overall design and gamer-like Aura RGBs on the back, but there are plenty of upgrades on offer.

At the heart of the ROG Phone 3 you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus alongside the Adreno 650 GPU and either 12 or 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM, offering incredible performance for mobile gamers and super-fast 5G connectivity. As if that wasn’t enough, Asus has gone a step further by offering PC-like control over the SoC, giving users the option of either overclocking the CPU and increasing the throttle limit to boost performance and a generate sustained high frame rate, or underclock it to extend battery life and keep the phone cool.

Temperature control is boosted by the new GameCool 3 cooling system, which actually draws heat out of the case to keep the phone cool during high-intensity gaming sessions. It features a 6x larger heatsink than the ROG Phone 2, along with a redesigned 3D vapor chamber and larger graphite film. It’s important to keep your phone cool when gaming, as a hot phone often causes performance issues.

The famous AirTrigger technology has been updated with the ROG Phone 3 and now offers the possibility to split each touch button into two parts, and you can also integrate new gestures – like swipe and motion-based gestures – to give the buttons more functionality. You’ll also find upgraded dual front speakers developed in collaboration with Swedish high-end audio company Dirac, along with Wi-Fi with multiple antennas for more stable connectivity and a quad-mic noise-cancellation array to bring you the best phone to offer gaming experience possible.

According to Asus, the 6.59-inch AMOLED display is currently the fastest and most accurate display available on a smartphone. There are certainly big improvements compared to the ROG Phone 2, which boasts an improved 144Hz refresh rate and 10-bit HDR10+ support. It’s also incredibly bright, with a claimed peak brightness of 1000 nits – the iPhone 11 Pro has a ceiling of 800 nits for reference.

Touch latency is also down to 25ms, and there’s an improved 270Hz touch sampling rate for improved touch response times. Plus, with TÃœV Low Blue Light and Flicker Reduced certifications, the display should also be a lot easier on the eyes.

With such a detailed display and a capable SoC to power it, battery is a key area when it comes to the ROG Phone 3, and it’s another area where Asus doesn’t disappoint. At 6000mAh, it’s among the largest batteries in any smartphone right now – Asus claims it wanted it even bigger, but couldn’t do so without optimizing the phone’s dimensions.

New customizable battery saving profiles are offered, offering granular control over background apps and hardware, along with new battery care options (including slow charge and charge limit) to extend battery life. And when a top-up is needed, the 30W fast charge should get you up and running fairly quickly.

While this isn’t the main focus for gamers, an upgraded camera setup is also available. You’ll find a 64MP f/1.8 aperture Sony IMX686 main camera with a 1.7-inch sensor, as well as a 13MP 125-degree ultra-wide camera with real-time distortion correction and a 5MP basic macro sensor for Close ups. The selfie camera has also been updated with a 24Mp sensor.

Being Asus, Asus wants to push everything to the extreme, and that’s why the ROG Phone 3 can record [email protected]more than the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, along with [email protected] for both the front and rear cameras. You even have access to a slow-motion video mode at 480 fps and the ability to record 4K time-lapse.

There are also a number of accessories, all sold separately, to further enhance the high-end gaming experience Asus aims to offer, including the AeroActive Cooler 3 and the ROG Kunai 3 gamepad. One of the more interesting optional accessories is the new TwinView Dock 3, which offers a second 144Hz display for gaming.

If you don’t mind not having the fastest possible experience and want to save some money, the Asus ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition might be the right choice. You get exactly the same hardware as the standard ROG Phone 3 – the only difference is performance. You get the regular Snapdragon 865 rather than the 865 Plus, plus a discounted 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

It might seem underpowered compared to the flagship model, but even the Strix Edition has enough to rival most 2020 flagships, and at a great price.
