introduction

Asus just announced the Zenfone 6 – the latest in a line that was hugely successful a couple of years ago (the Zenfone 2 was one of the highlights of 2015) but somehow failed to maintain that mainstream appeal long-term. But if any phone will help reignite that flame, this is it.

We had to spend a few days with the Zenfone 6 (ZS630KL for those who like Asus’ naming nomenclature) before the announcement, and we’ve already managed to gather some fascinating details about it to share here.

We’ve started with the most obvious in the clip above – the Zenfone 6 has a dual camera that sits on a motorized platform that rotates 180 degrees and flips the main camera to take selfies. Of course, there is more to it than that, and we will go into more detail on the following pages.

Asus says the swivel mechanism wasn’t meant to be the star of the show but was ultimately a consequence of their quest to simply make a good phone for power users. That meant a frameless display that’s as large as possible, the latest internals for smooth performance, plenty of battery and good cameras. During the development of the Zenfone 6, it just turned out that this was the only right way.

Speaking of internals, before we continue, take a quick look at the sheet below.

It’s also a remarkable array of features that go beyond the essentials – the Zenfone 6 has a headphone jack, dedicated microSD slot, FM radio receiver and stereo speakers. If there was only one IR emitter, we hear you sigh – well, it’s missing.

Moving on to the hands-on section, we’ll see how the Zenfone 6 performs off the paper and in the real world.
