Source: GTA 6 release date, platforms and gameplay rumours
Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the greatest games of all time, so it’s not really about that When GTA 6 is coming, however When.
The game’s developer, Rockstar, was in no rush to develop a sequel as they regularly released updates for GTA Online while in the meantime working on a small game called Red Dead Redemption 2.
With GTA 5 now getting a remastered edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X, there’s even less reason to expect GTA 6 soon, but still – we live in hope.
Ultimately, there are almost no hard facts about GTA 6, but there are plenty of rumors worth reading about the upcoming title that we’ve rounded up here.
GTA 6 rumors at a glance:
- Set in Vice City (fictional Miami) and a South American city (possibly Bogota)
- Period: 1970s, 1980s
- Topic: building a drug empire
- Platforms: Xbox Series X, PS5, PC
When will GTA 6 appear?
Estimated release date: 2022 – 2023
Since Rockstar hasn’t even confirmed the existence of GTA 6, there is no firm release date. Rockstar has been working feverishly on Red Dead Redemption 2, but now that the company isn’t dedicating most of its resources to this project, it can move on to the crown jewel itself, GTA.
However, we’re confident the company is working on the game, thanks in no small part to a Kotaku report on Rockstar’s labor conditions stating that its next game is “a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.”
There’s no way the game will be ready in time to coincide with the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which is expected in late 2020, especially since there’s no official word Rockstar is working on it.
With the GTA 5 remaster for next-gen consoles due in the second half of 2021, we expect GTA 6 to arrive in 2022 at the earliest, and most likely later.
A Take Two SEC filing projects a large increase in marketing spend for the fiscal year ending April 2023 through March 2024 with a marketing budget of $89 million, up from $41 million last year. That might not sound like much, but the same kind of spike has previously predicted the Red Dead Redemption 2 release window.
On the flip side, Take Two itself quashed that rumor, telling GamesIndustry.biz that those expenses were for marketing commitments to third-party companies – and not internal projects like GTA 6.
As previously mentioned, there is no great rush as there is still plenty of life (and money) to be found in the current game as the GTA Online platform evolves.
Where is the next GTA set?
- Miami (Vice City in game)
- Colombia (possibly Bogotá)
This is perhaps the biggest question of all. We know from previous interviews that Rockstar starts designing the games once settled in the right place, so the choice of city will directly affect the tone and feel of the game.
In the past, Rockstar has looked at Tokyo as a possible location, and London has appeared in one of the older top-down 2D GTA releases.
However, it’s more likely that Vice City will be the backdrop for the story, a theory supported by the fact that Take Two updated its hold on the gtavi.com and gtavicecityonline.com domains in 2020 . GTA: VIce City anyone?
More exciting is the possibility that the new generation hardware will finally allow Rockstar to do what it has wanted to do for several years: have multiple cities in one game!
In a 2012 interview, Rockstar boss Leslie Benzies stated that they wanted to achieve this by allowing players to fly between locations. It would be an incredible feat and would offer players a truly massive playground. And since Vice City is so inextricably linked to the 1980s, how would it function in a modern setting?
Well, rumors – particularly a now-deleted Reddit post we included below – suggest the game will span multiple eras, but stick to the same type of period – the 1970s and 1980s.
This rumor is backed up by a letter, which you can see in this Reddit post, which clearly shows that Take Two and Rockstar scouted properties and businesses in Florida in October 2019. They’re interested in interiors so they can “build environments in their games that reflect real-world environments.”
And if the information in the First post is correct, then the widely used codename Project Americas makes a lot of sense since the game’s secondary city would be in a South American country. And as you can read in this Reddit post, Rockstar has renewed its GTA Bogota branding every year since 2003.
Bogota is the capital of Colombia, and since the game is said to be heavily influenced by Netflix’s Narcos, that trademark might even come into play.
What platforms will GTA 6 run on?
Rumored Supported Devices:
- Xbox Series X
- PlayStation 5
- personal computer
We’re expecting to see GTA 6 on both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles thanks to their graphical firepower, which should ensure the game is significantly prettier than the previous generation. PCs will hopefully see a simultaneous release this time around, having lagged behind consoles for GTA 5 by a couple of years.
It’s also fair to say that GTA isn’t really the sort of title you’ll find on the new Nintendo Switch – although we’d love a more portable GTA experience. It’s possible that last-gen consoles will fall short, as the projected size and complexity of the GTA 6 world is proving to be too much for current hardware.
What can I expect from GTA 6 gameplay?
Rumored Gameplay Summary:
- Timeline spanning multiple decades/epochs
- Ability to fly between cities
- You build a drug empire and export drugs from South America to Vice City
- Will possibly feature a fictionalized version of Fidel Castro
At Rockstar, we don’t see any major deviations from the tried-and-tested formula of an open-world adventure. It’s what players expect… and want. However, of course, it needs to be more open – so if you’re listening, Rockstar, please allow all buildings and shops to be entered.
Again, apart from the rumors from the “Jackolantern” post, the game will have you playing a single protagonist building a Pablo Escobar-style drug empire.
Other interesting tidbits are that the weather is an integral part of the gameplay, but more importantly the storyline spans multiple decades. This would be another step up for the series, which features different visuals, cars, and a main character who ages as the story progresses.
A word of caution: All of these rumors point to an ambitious game, bigger than any GTA before it, but there’s now reason to expect perhaps the opposite. The aforementioned Kotaku report on the studio crisis suggested that part of the company’s attempts to improve working conditions would be to scale down plans for the next GTA – at least at launch.
The Kotaku Report says that “One plan that management has laid out for the next game…is to start with a mid-size release (which would still be a big game by Rockstar’s standards), which will then be expanded with regular updates over time, which can help relieve stress and crunch.”
Regarding official company comments, Rockstar President Leslie Benzies teased that plans for GTA 6 are still up in the air. “We don’t know what GTA 6 will be, but we have some ideas,” Benzies said during a Develop interview.
“It comes first from the idea. Where it is put is the first question. Then that defines the missions; you do different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story are fleshed out together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works, allowing you to layer the mission.
Whatever happens, there will definitely be an online component, as well as single player, and we can’t wait for that.
