introduction

The Honor 20 series premiere couldn’t have come at a worse time – the phones became official when the Trump administration in the US banned US companies from working with Huawei – Honor’s parent company. This cast a serious shadow over the future of these phones even before they were released, so of course their launch was delayed.

The restrictions imposed have not affected the release of the Honor 20 as much as that of the Honor 20 Pro, so the former is already on sale. And no matter how the US ban situation unfolds, the Honor 20 will continue to receive security updates and access to Google Play services.

For the first time, Honor broke with its pattern and announced not one, but two flagships – the Honor 20 and the Honor 20 Pro. They don’t differ in screen or chipset, but in their camera and storage configurations. The Honor 20 loses the telephoto camera and comes with half the storage and less RAM of the Pro. That’s pretty much it. Oh, and it gets a nice discount along the way.

But let’s start from the beginning, because not everyone knows the Honor 20 Pro.

The Honor 20, just like the Pro, has this so-called Dynamic Holographic Signature Design and regardless of the color option, it looks pretty stunning. Honor didn’t skimp on looks, nor on materials – the Honor 20 is a dual-glass smartphone with an aluminum frame.

The Honor 20’s specs are flagship worthy – there’s a 6.26-inch IPS LCD screen with a small hole for the selfie camera, the latest Kirin 980 chipset with 6GB of RAM, and a quartet of cameras The rear – 48 MP main camera, a 16 MP for ultra wide-angle shooting, a 2 MP macro shooter and a 2 MP depth sensor. However, there is no OIS on either of them.

And just like the Honor 20 Pro, the Honor 20’s fingerprint scanner is placed on the right side, which is unusual for the brand but not invisible.

There are a few things missing from the Honor 20’s spec sheet – an audio jack, a memory expansion slot and if we have to be extra picky – protection from dust and liquids. But considering the somewhat affordable price point, we’d forgive the lack of water resistance.

The Honor 20’s biggest concern was the lack of Google certification for Android OS. Well, the matter is now settled and the Honor 20 has full access to the Play Store, runs on Android Pie and will not face any problems with future updates. In fact, the damage has already been done, and Honor probably has to answer that for every single potential customer, and that’s why we’re saying that upfront, just in case.

Unpack Honor 20

As an affordable flagship, the Honor 20 retail package is rather modest. Inside the paper box you will find a 22.5W charger and a USB-C cable, which is needed for Super Charge to work.

The Honor 20 omits a 3.5mm jack, but there’s a USB to 3.5mm adapter in the box.

Honor 20 rating

A protective case is not included for the European market, but we cannot say for all other regions. However, there is a thin screen protector that comes fitted on every phone at the factory and our Honor 20 came with one too.
