Microsoft has announced that Project xCloud, its long-running cloud game streaming service, will finally launch in September as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, bringing Xbox Game Pass to Android phones.
Bundled into the £10.99/$14.99 monthly Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription starting September 15, xCloud will allow gamers to stream games directly to Android phones and tablets.
At launch, however, it will be exclusive to Android, with no support for iPhones or iPads. This is despite the fact that Microsoft has been testing xCloud on iOS and iPadOS devices, and the company says Apple’s App Store policies are the reason for the delay — though it didn’t specify exactly which policies are the problem.
Unsurprisingly, the Project xCloud branding is nowhere to be seen. Instead, this is billed simply as a new cloud gaming feature for Game Pass Ultimate, although interestingly it’s still officially a beta. This is consistent with Microsoft’s recent efforts to push Game Pass as its dominant platform, and at times even downplay upcoming Xbox Series X hardware as it emphasizes the value of its subscription service.
It helps that most people don’t even have to buy a new controller for it. The service will work with Xbox One controllers and even Sony’s DualShock 4 gamepads, while dedicated wearable gamepads from Razer, 8BitDo and PowerA are now available through Microsoft’s storefront.
The company is also promising more news at tomorrow’s Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, suggesting that rumors of an official link with the upcoming Note 20 phones could very well be true.
If you’re a current xCloud playtester, the bad news is that the service’s current test ends on September 11, just days before its full launch on September 15 in 22 countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States.
Microsoft says more than 100 games will be included when cloud streaming launches, including Gears 5, Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Sea of Thieves. The full list will be revealed at release on September 15, but here are the 36 titles confirmed so far:
