For every flagship smartphone, there’s always a watered-down alternative that doesn’t offer exactly the same features but ends up being a lot cheaper. It’s fair to say that the Honor View 20 is technically a watered down Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but the “watered down” features don’t dilute the overall experience, which we loved in the Mate 20 Pro. This comes closest to the Mate 20 Pro while spending about half as much.
Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei that repackages Huawei phones into more affordable versions, often with the same specs but with some key differences: Honor’s cameras aren’t branded Leica like Huawei’s, Honor uses lower-cost displays, and Honor phones don’t have them Premium features such as water resistance or wireless charging.
Honor renamed its V-series the View outside of China, starting with the View 10. It had similar specs to the Mate 10 Pro, but its looks, in contrast, were bland and outdated. In comparison, the View 20 feels like the View 10 has blossomed into a premium modern flagship.
The Honor View 20 also implements a front-facing pinhole camera into the display, which pushes it further into modern edge-to-edge designs. We don’t have major issues with this pinhole camera, but we can’t say it’s any less noticeable than a dewdrop-shaped notch.
In this long-term review, we’ll see how the Honor View 20 has fared over the past few months and find out if initial concerns have been addressed in firmware updates. We also think it’s a good opportunity for US audiences to take a look and see what they’re missing – since the Honor View 20 and most other Chinese phones aren’t sold in the US.
