(Pocket-lint) – Alexa can now queue your podcasts, as both Spotify and Apple have announced streams via their Podcasts apps will now work with Alexa. So if you have an Amazon Echo device or an Alexa-enabled speaker, just ask Assistant to play a podcast you want to hear.

Apple Podcasts is perhaps the most popular podcast streaming platform available, although Spotify is emerging as one of its main competitors thanks to exclusive deals with a number of celebrity and podcasters with large followings. While Spotify is available on a variety of devices, including Alexa devices, Apple Podcasts is more limited, but it’s still available across the web, on Apple devices, and now on Alexa devices.

The new Alexa Skills for Apple Podcasts and Spotify both officially launched in the US on December 13, 2021, and have since rolled out to other regions. That’s how they work.

How to ask Alexa to play Apple Podcasts

When you’re ready to start the latest episode of your favorite podcast, e.g. For example, to watch the Bill Simmons podcast, all you have to do is enable the Apple Podcasts skill and say to your Alexa device, “Alexa, play the Bill Simmons podcast on Apple Podcasts.” It will then play the latest episode.

We recommend making Apple Podcasts the default platform for podcasts, but it’s not required. Just link your Apple ID to the Alexa app. This allows you to resume podcasts you’ve started on other devices. For example, you can start, stop on your iPhone, and continue later on your Echo. Just say, “Alexa, resume playing The Bill Simmons Podcast,” and it will pick up right where you left off.

  1. Open the Alexa app on your mobile device.
  2. Locate the settings menu.
  3. Scroll down until you see the Music and Podcasts menu.
  4. Select “Link a new service”.
  5. Select Apple Podcasts
  6. After that, return to the Music and Podcasts menu.
  7. Choose Apple Podcasts > Preferences, then choose Link Account.
  8. Now sign in with your Apple ID
  9. Once you’ve logged in and gone through your two-factor verification, tap “Allow” to grant him access and you’re done.

To enable Apple Podcasts as your default service, just follow the simple steps below:

  1. Open the Alexa app and search for “Settings”.
  2. Select “Music and Podcasts”
  3. Tap Default Services.
  4. Under Podcasts, next to Amazon Music, select Change.
  5. Now select Apple Podcasts from the list

When you’re done, try one of these commands:

  1. “Alexa, play Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend on Apple Podcasts.”
  2. “Alexa, play Yesterday’s Daily on Apple Podcasts.”
  3. “Alexa, resume playing Business Wars on Apple Podcasts.”

How to ask Alexa to play Spotify podcasts

Playing a podcast through Spotify requires two things: linking your Spotify account to Alexa, and making Spotify your default music and podcast platform when using Alexa. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to find and play podcasts, as well as switch between devices.

  1. Enable the Spotify skill on Alexa (here).
  2. Open the Alexa app on your mobile device.
  3. Locate the settings menu.
  4. Scroll down until you see the Music and Podcast menu.
  5. Select Spotify, then Settings > Link Account and follow the steps.
  6. After that, return to the Music and Podcasts menu.
  7. Choose Spotify as default using the same method as Apple Music Guide, but choose Spotify instead.

When you’re done, try one of these commands:

  1. “Alexa, play Jemele Hil is private on Spotify.”
  2. “Alexa, play The Joe Budden Podcast.” Spotify.
  3. “Alexa, continue playing Amy Schumer Presents.” Spotify.
