Source: Catan: World Explorers is next game from PoGo creator Niantic
How are you following the double whammy of Pokémon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite? Apparently with Catan: World Explorers. We didn’t see that coming.
Niantic, makers of the two hit games (and their predecessor Ingress), has announced that its next title will be a similar massively multiplayer augmented reality take on the classic board game Catan.
As with Pokémon Go and Wizards Unite, you must grab your phone and swipe out into the world to play, transforming real-world landmarks and monuments into the tiles of a global game board.
Since it’s Catan, you’ll need to collect bricks, wood, grain, ore, and wool to trade with other players, and collect development cards to build and improve settlements and cities.
There will also be team-style gameplay, driven by earning victory points by building roads and settlements, with a chance to rank at both local and global levels and earn seasonal rewards.
The game’s website is now live and you can pre-register to play the game at launch. There’s no word yet on when that will be, but it will apparently be making its beta debut “very soon.”
Catan: World Explorers is one of more than 10 projects Niantic is working on, and also announced today that it is collaborating with interactive theater pioneers Punchdrunk — behind the likes of Sleep No More and The Drowned Man — on some of those projects. which will “reinvent storytelling for 21st-century audiences and continue to expand the horizons of interactive entertainment.”
Pokemon Go, Niantic’s biggest game, is still going strong. Not only is it possible to play the game from home during lockdown, but the annual Pokémon Go Fest is still happening in late July.
