They say you can’t beat the originals, and getting the first three starters in a Pokémon game always seems like an achievement. Now that the Isle of Armor DLC has been released for Pokémon Sword and Shield, trainers can get their hands on Bulbasaur and Squirtle (and of course Charmander in the main game).

If you want to know how to get each of the three starters, read on. We also have a tutorial on how to get started with the Isle of Armor DLC if you’re having trouble.

How to get Charmander in Pokémon Sword and Shield

If you want to get your hands on the fire starter Charmander (which eventually evolves into Charizard), you must defeat Leon and become the champion of the Galar region.

Once you’ve done that, wake up at home in Postwick. Continue to your rival Hop’s house across the street. When you enter, head up the stairs and straight into Hop’s room. There’s a Poké Ball waiting on the floor with a note from Leon saying it’s a gift for you.

When you pick it up, you’ll get the fiery Charmander all to yourself!

How to get Bulbasaur and Squirtle in the Isle of Armor DLC

As the headline suggests, before you can get your hands on Bulbasaur or Squirtle in the game story, you must first purchase the Isle of Armor DLC.

You should continue the main DLC questline by visiting the Master Dojo, Mustard, and completing the first of the three trials to get the armor after defeating your new rival for the first time.

The first attempt is to capture three of the fast Slowpoke. You can spot them in the soothing wetlands, where they create large clouds as they walk in circles. The easiest way to catch them is to use your Rotom bike and watch the pattern the Slowpoke use to pick them up and catch them. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have to fight and defeat everyone.

When that’s all done, go back to the dojo. Honey brings out Bulbasaur and Squirtle and offers you to take one of them to training. Both are capable of gigantimaxing. However, they can only do this in their final forms (Venusaurs and Blastoises) and will take a while to get there considering they start at level 5.

This is how you get all three starters in your team

As far as we’re aware at the moment, you can’t get all three starters through the game organically, as you’ll have to choose between Bulbasaur and Squirtle. You’ll either have to play through the Isle of Armor twice, trade with a friend via Link Trade, or import it from a previous game using Pokémon HOME.

The best games for this are the physical copies of Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu! and Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee! or if you have a Pokémon Bank on your 3DS that is linked to Pokémon HOME.

How to transfer Pokémon using Pokémon HOME

Here’s a basic rundown of how to transfer your Bulbasaur or Squirtle into your party on Sword and Shield.

  • Insert your game cartridge for the game you want to transfer Pokémon from
  • Open Pokémon HOME from your Switch main menu
  • Select “Pokémon” and then select the game you want to transfer Pokémon from
  • Make sure Bulbasaur and/or Squirtle are in your boxes – not in your party – and choose which ones you want (you can only do one at a time).
  • Deposit them in your crates in Pokémon HOME, save and finish
  • With Pokémon HOME still running in the background, switch your game cartridge to Pokémon Sword/Shield
  • Select Pokémon, then select the game you want to transfer to
  • When your Pokémon HOME boxes appear, select the Pokémon you want and deposit it into your Sword/Shield game
  • Save and exit – you have now successfully transferred your Pokemon

You should be aware that Pokemon you transfer using this method cannot reach Gigantimax.
