We assume that by now we’ve all taken in Samsung’s new Galaxy S10 range together and enjoyed it to the fullest. After all, it’s one of the industry’s current annual obsessions. Just in case you haven’t had your fill, we could refer you to our rather in-depth hands-on review.
That’s all well and good, we never say no to great technical eye candy. But what if you don’t really need the latest the Korean giant has to offer? This chic new dynamic AMOLED panel and its sophisticated fingerprint reader and HDR10+ support. Or this forward-facing TOF sensor. Definitely fascinating, but hardly necessary. What if you just want a solid, high-end smartphone and like Samsung’s way of doing things in the Android space?
Well, the “A” series is traditionally where to look. However, this particular lineup has been undergoing a soul searching for some time. From an insistence on a metal construction to IP ratings and a few other inconsistent trends, Samsung has mainly used the “A” line as a proving ground for new features in recent months, like the quad-camera setup on the Galaxy A9 (2018) or the Infinity-O display of the Galaxy A8s.

Well, this crazy chapter could happily be coming to an end if the Galaxy A50 and A30 are any indication. Both are much tamer and offer traditional Samsung offerings. Instead of experimental features for marketing purposes, we’re seeing a return to the tried-and-tested philosophy of simply offering a feature tiering of the Galaxy S line.

However, there is still a lot going on behind the scenes in terms of product strategy. Last but not least, there’s the revised naming scheme, which is clearly borrowed from the company’s new Galaxy M line. We’re still not sure if this indicates some sort of beneficial move toward naming unification and better segmentation.
Speaking of potentially sensible and beneficial choices, we definitely have to place the new Galaxy Tab S5e in that category. Sure, we’re fully aware that for many, the tablet device class is pretty much irrelevant as the average phone screen size keeps increasing.

Still, tablets could have their place in our lives and they excel in certain use cases. There’s still a potential market for them, provided the right balance of features and price is actually struck. That’s what the Tab S5e is aiming for – lowering the prices for a relatively premium feature set to appeal to a wider audience. We can definitely stand behind this approach.
