Source: Total War: Troy will launch for free on Epic – for 24 hours only
Sega has announced a novel release strategy for its next Total War game: it will simply give away the game for free.
A Total War Saga: Troy launches August 13th exclusively on the Epic Games Store, where it’s free for 24 hours to anyone who wants it and you can keep it if you purchase it in time. Epic paid to distribute the game for free as part of a deal that keeps the game exclusive to the Epic Store for a year.
“Thanks to Epic, we are able to offer a Total War title for free on the day of its release. It’s extremely exciting for us to be able to do this for our players,” said Tim Heaton of Sega.
“Not only does this mean we can bring the stories and legends of Troy to a wide audience through Epic’s massive platform, but it also means that new players can try Total War for the first time and experience the unique gameplay the series is famous for.” .”
Troy is the second game in the Total War Saga spin-off series, following 2018’s Thrones of Britannia. The developers say the Saga titles “take the big strategy and real-time combat of a core Total War game and channel them into an intense story focal point,” making them more focused games but with just as much strategic depth to enjoy can.
Sega and the developers at Creative Assembly haven’t revealed how much Troy will cost after the free period ends, but Thrones of Britannia costs £29.99 / $39.99 so it’s a pretty safe bet that Troy will be similar, if not even will be the same.
And while it will be exclusive to Epic at launch, it will make it to Steam – eventually. This is a year-long exclusivity deal, meaning the game should release on Steam in August 2021 for those who are genuinely reluctant to buy through Epic, although the developers have warned there will be no crossplay between the two versions.
In a blog post, the developers wanted to emphasize that this exclusivity deal is only for Troy and that there are “no plans for future games to be exclusive to Epic” – although that’s not a promise that won’t be the case.
