Source: Sony WH-1000XM5 official with a new design, enhanced performance and noise cancellation
(Pocket-lint) – Sony has announced the fifth generation of its award-winning WH-1000X headphones. The new Sony WH-1000XM5 boasts a new design and a host of performance updates to tempt you to upgrade.
Since their launch in 2016, the Sony WH-1000X have been one of the most popular over-ear headphones for travelers – or anyone who values top-notch noise-cancelling.
At launch, they cast a shadow over the Bose Quiet Comfort models, which were de facto for air travel – with Sony earning more praise with each iteration.
The fifth generation model marks the biggest update in the history of these headphones, mainly due to the design change. Gone is that familiar look, with a softer and sleeker aesthetic.
It’s not just for looks – Sony told us this design aims to reduce wind noise around the outside of the headphones, reduce angles and gaps and boost performance.
Sony also promises that this new design is more comfortable, with softer synthetic padding and a stepless slider to ensure you get the right fit.
There’s also a boost to the technology on board. First, there’s a new 30mm driver that uses a carbon fiber composite material while inheriting premium details from Sony’s high-end Walkman line, such as: B. solder mixed with gold to ensure a better optimized circuit.
There’s also a doubling of the onboard mics compared to the 1000XM4 – so there are now eight mics, all collecting data to ensure the correct external noise can be detected and eliminated.
Sony says there’s a real-world performance boost with active noise cancellation; While the low-end reduction (think aircraft noise) has always been really good, the improvement here is on the higher end – with a notable improvement over previous 1000X models.
That means it’s better suited to reducing higher-level external noise, such as human voices. That could make these headphones better for office work, for example, when you don’t want background chatter getting through.
The improvements are delivered by two processors, the QN1 and V1, as found in the previous iteration of these headphones but now working smarter to deliver results.
Speaking of working smart, there’s AI support to ensure your voice comes through loud and clear on calls, while the headphones can also detect when you start speaking and pause your music.
As before, they also adapt their mode to your activities, e.g. B. walking or sitting to vary the volume of the ambient sound being admitted.
There’s support for Google Assistant or Alexa, meaning you can bark commands through the headphones and leave your phone in your pocket.
There’s still support for a 3.5mm wired connection, but these headphones also offer Google Fast Pair for a quick and seamless connection with Android devices like Sony’s Xperia devices.
And they might be great for an Experia phone, as they also support Sony’s proprietary LDAC for higher fidelity Bluetooth audio, which not all phones support.
There’s a USB-C for charging with support for PD – Power Delivery – for a faster charging experience. You get 30 hours of use with active noise cancellation or 40 hours without. It takes about 3.5 hours to fully charge.
On top of that, there is also a new housing design. The new case folds flatter when empty, so you don’t have to carry such a bulky lump around in your bag when using your headphones.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 is available to order now, priced at $399 in the US, £380 in the UK and €420 in Europe. Deliveries will start on May 20th.
