introduction

Sony’s newly revamped smartphone lineup revolves around the number 1 – there’s the flagship Xperia 1, which isn’t quite ready for prime time, and the mid-range Xperia 10 and 10 Plus, both of which are hugely popular in stores right now . We recently took a closer look at the 10 Plus, now it’s the turn of the smaller 10s.

Similar to the other 1 Series, the Xperia 10 has a 21:9 display – Sony sees this as the future of smartphones and is keen to take us there. The 6-inch 10 still has a FullHD+ resolution, meaning it has the same number of pixels as the 10 Plus, but comes at a few disadvantages compared to the larger model.

Chief among these is the chipset – the Snapdragon 636 in the 10 Plus is a bit underpowered, and the Xperia 10 comes with the less exciting S630. A gig less RAM than the Plus 4 and a depth camera on the back of the 10 as opposed to the Plus’ telephoto shooter are some of the more obvious differences, but there are others hidden from plain view – take out the card tray and You’ll see a shared slot for the second SIM and memory card, while the Plus had dedicated slots for all three.

The Xperia 10 retains the Plus’s selfie camera – the segmentation only goes so far. The smaller phone also shares the same unibody design as the 10 Plus, complete with the side-mounted fingerprint sensor – it’s physically almost the same phone, just smaller. We’ll talk more about that in a moment, but let’s go through the retail package first.

Unboxing the Sony Xperia 10

The Xperia 10 we have for review comes in a plain white box with the phone’s name embossed in gray on it. While the box itself is representative of what you’ll find in store, what’s inside isn’t necessarily so. Sony bundles vary by region and carrier, so it wouldn’t hurt to ask before you buy.

What we got was a basic 5V/1.5A charger and a matching USB A-to-C cable. The phone is Power Delivery ready and Sony makes a PD charger that could potentially make it into the box in some markets, although we wouldn’t count on it. You’re slightly more likely to find a set of earbuds in the box – again not in all markets, but some will get these.
