(Pocket-lint) – It’s one of the most mysterious Phase 4 films since Marvel Studios first announced Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The long-awaited sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange will serve as the culmination of multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe storylines – as studio president Kevin Feige has repeatedly teased at Comic-Con and D23 Expo.

So what should you watch ahead of the film’s US premiere on May 6, 2022 in preparation? Let’s dive into all the movies and shows in the MCU that the new film might hark back to or reference, and why.

All the Marvel Movies and Shows You Should Watch Before Doctor Strange 2

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015 – Movie)

Age of Ultron introduces Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff – who will play a pivotal role in the new Doctor Strange film. You’ll see the first hint of her reality-altering powers when she loses her brother.

Doctor Strange (2016 – Movie)

In this film, actor Benedict Cumberbatch makes his MCU debut as Doctor Strange, aka Stephen Vincent Strange, making him a must-see before his sequel hits theaters.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018 – Movie)

Doctor Strange plays a crucial role in the first fight against Thanos. He uses his knowledge of the future to realize that the only way to finally defeat Thanos is to let him win… for now.

Avengers: Endgame (2019 – Movie)

Endgame marks Benedict Cumberbatch’s third appearance as Doctor Strange and takes part in the final battle against Thanos.

What if…? (2021 – Disney+ TV show)

Episodes 4, 5 and 10

Episodes 4 and 10 introduce a variant of Doctor Strange who loses the love of his life instead of using his hands, leading him down a dark path. There is an apparently evil looking version of Strange appearing in Multiverse of Madness trailers that could be linked to those episodes. As for What If… Episode 5, it introduces us to a zombified version of the MCU. Fans are suspecting this episode could be linked to what appears to be a zombified version of Doctor Strange, which we see in the new Multiverse of Madness trailer.

WandaVision (2021 – Disney+ TV Show)

WandaVision witnesses newly caught Wanda Maximoff deal with the trauma of having to kill her friend Vision, only to see him rise and be killed again. She later takes over an entire town to create a reality where she can live happily ever after with vision. But Wanda isn’t the villain in her own story, as it turns out that neighbor Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) is the Wicked Witch in Westview all along.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021 – Movie)

Doctor Strange is no longer Sorcerer Supreme. His partner and friend Wong (played by Benedict Wong) has held that title since Strange was snatched away. Wong makes an appearance in this film – where he teams up with former villain Abomination for a moment. We may see more of this partnership in the Multiverse of Madness.

Loki (2021 – Disney+ TV Show)

Loki reveals the Time Variance Authority and their efforts to protect the sacred timeline, which is ultimately destroyed at the end of season one, paving the way for the Multiverse of Madness.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021 – film)

No Way Home witnesses Peter Parker going from Tom Holland to Doctor Strange to prevent the public from learning of his secret identity. When Strange agrees to help him with a reality-altering spell, the consequences have more far-reaching consequences than Strange originally thought.

X-Men (2000 – movie)

The trailers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness include a segment of Patrick Stewart – presumably speaking for Professor Charles Xavier, the leader of the X-Men. It’s hard to tell which version of this character will appear in the Multiverse of Madness, so why not start with Stewart’s first round playing the character in 2000’s X-Men?
