introduction

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is now a few months old, so why not expand this family by introducing a follow-up – the Mi 9T? We won’t pretend to know what Xiaomi thinks when it comes to phone naming, but the 9T we recently reviewed reminded us of the Mi 9 SE, which went live alongside the flagship in the spring. Today is the day we tell you more about it.

The Mi 9 SE is the most compact of the 9s, the almost 6-inch looks tiny next to the 6.39-inch Mi 9 and 9T. It’s a Samsung-made SuperAMOLED, like you’d find on the other two, so the SE isn’t treated as a budget device in that regard just because it’s the cheapest of the bunch.

It also has a triple camera and proper triple camera – normal/telephoto/ultra wide, just like the big boys. It’s the same arrangement you’d find on the Mi 9T, which means a few downgrades compared to the high-end Mi 9, but it’s still a respectable lineup of shooters.

The Mi 9 SE may have the lowest-performing chipset in the family, but the Snapdragon 712 isn’t all that bad and packs a lot of punch. And with the smallest screen, it should come as no surprise that the 9 SE also has the lowest battery capacity.

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE specifications

  • Various: fingerprint reader under the display; single downward-firing speaker; no 3.5 mm jack plug.

A few points in the list above may raise an eyebrow or two – why isn’t there a headphone jack, for example? We know it doesn’t look flagship in 2019 so the Mi 9 doesn’t have it, but the 9T has it and not the SE, what’s the point?

Then there’s the missing microSD card slot. One could argue that Xiaomi rarely fits phones outside of the Redmi series, so the Mi 9 SE is no exception, but it would have been nice to have. It’s nice to have an IR blaster too, and that’s a tick in the SE’s spec sheet.

Unpack Xiaomi Mi 9 SE

The Mi 9T comes in a black box with the phone printed on it, the Mi 9 SE doesn’t show that much flair here. It’s still a nice looking box, however plain white it may be, with the odd silver logo stamped here and there.

Inside, you’re greeted by a paper sleeve containing a smoke-colored transparent silicone sleeve. The phone is in a tray underneath. With it out of the way, you’ll see the hefty power supply, rated at 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A, and a matching USB A-to-C cable. Xiaomi also bundles a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter so you can use your headphones with the phone. There’s no headset in the box, and there’s never been a Xiaomi phone we can think of.
