introduction

Think a little too long about buying a Xiaomi phone and chances are a new one will pop up, making your decision even harder. After the Xiaomi Mi 9 made headlines earlier this year as one of the first devices to feature the Snapdragon 855 chipset, a more balanced model from the same family is now available – the Mi 9T – and that’s done away with a notch’s eyesore.

The Xiaomi Mi 9T is indeed a more balanced version of the headliner, not only bringing a better AMOLED screen and a larger battery, but also costing less. Instead of the most powerful chipset of the moment – the Snapdragon 855 – Xiaomi has opted for the most powerful mid-range SoC aka the new Snapdragon 730, which goes quite well with this 1080p screen.

Xiaomi launched a weakened version of the Mi 9 back in March alongside the flagship – the Mi 9 SE. However, the Mi 9T isn’t an overhauled SE, it’s more of an upgraded Mi 9 with a twist.

So the highlights of the Mi 9T are the new AMOLED screen, now free of cutouts thanks to the motorized pop-up selfie camera. It’s also the first phone to use the new Snapdragon 730 chip, the best silicon the mid-range market has to offer. And on the rear is a triple camera setup with a familiar wide/ultra wide/telephoto combo.

  • Various: fingerprint reader under the display; single downward-firing speaker; 3.5mm jack

The Mi 9T also boasts some eye-catching and fairly unique paint finishes across all of its color options, and these could prove to be yet another feature to tip the scales in its favor.

The Mi 9T is priced right in between the Mi 9 SE and Mi 9, so realistically, nobody should expect major upgrades like water resistance or a higher-resolution screen. But if the better OLED screen, larger battery and beautiful design aren’t enough for you, perhaps the presence of an audio jack and FM radio is the deal sealer you’re looking for.

By the way, Xiaomi will sell the Mi 9T as Redmi K20 in some markets, but it’s essentially the same phone. So if you’re interested in the K20, you might want to stay here as well.

Unboxing the Xiaomi Mi 9T

The Mi 9T comes in a sleek black box and includes the essentials – a USB-C cable and an 18W charger. Just like other standard Xiaomi retail bundles, it also omits the headphones.

The paper tray in the box has a thin plastic casing for added protection for the glass back, although it hides the flashy looks.
