(Pocket-lint) – Alexa getting a little smarter again – Amazon is activating a feature where its smart assistant will alert you when your smart doorbell detects a person or package at your doorstep, making it easier to get notifications about different Get speakers and systems.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a crazy software workaround, in the sense that your doorbell still needs to be able to recognize and differentiate between people and packages, which not all can manage, while Amazon’s own Ring devices are behind the feature block a subscription.

The change means you can get a notification or alert from any Alexa device, be it your phone or a smart speaker, and you can customize it however you like.

Even more usefully, you can set up Alexa Routines using the notifications, so you can turn on an outside light when someone is in front of your house, or lock your front door yourself when a delivery arrives.

The new feature should be available today for Alexa users, at least for people detection, on all Ring cameras and any cameras that have a “Work with Alexa” certification.

Packet detection is a bit more cumbersome and works with a more limited range of cameras, like the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2.
