The PS4 has released countless shooters over its lifetime and more are coming out all the time, but we’ve narrowed them down to a shortlist of the very best for you. If you want to try out some bombastic gunfire, here are some excellent options for you.

A smashing reboot for a historical franchise, Doom is as pure as a shooter can get – it’s incredibly fast, bloody and frenetic, and it gratifies action in a way very few games can match. With a wide arsenal of weapons, playing through the campaign on any difficulty is just incredibly fun.
Doom: Eternal may have repeated the formula, but we actually prefer the older game for its purity and simplicity. However, if you love it too, you can skip straight to the sequel for even more demon slaying fun.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is such a massive game that we almost forgot it was a shooter. Red Dead Redemption 2 tells a beautiful, soulful story of the end of the outlaws, and there is so much to see and do throughout its epic length. However, most of the time you will be engaged in fun and exciting gunfights of one kind or another.
While the shooting sometimes plays second fiddle to the story and character, it’s still rewarding and fun with a bunch of timely weapons to try out, and you can spend hours just seeing if you’re hunting with different types of weapons be able.

One of the most imaginative campaigns of any game, let alone a shooter, came in a surprise package when Titanfall 2 released, especially considering the first game didn’t even have a single-player option. This time you get a brilliant story, albeit a bit short, to play through that keeps adding new twists to your gameplay.
Then you can move on to its excellent and still breathing multiplayer part, where you can fight as both a foot soldier and a mech pilot for fast-paced action with a really high skill ceiling.
Resident Evil Village
Resident Evil Village is creepy – let’s say that right away. So while it’s a shooter and has parts that are really action-packed and satisfying, there are also plenty of moments when you’re out of ammo or guns and, frankly, things get a little too scary.
However, if a bit of horror is your thing, this is a mix that might sound brilliant, and we absolutely loved Village. It’s fluffy in all the right ways and doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still knows how to be really disturbing when it wants to.
Battlefield V
Battlefield games offer a unique blend of vehicle and infantry combat, and while V was a bit shaky at launch, support has since turned it into a hugely satisfying multiplayer experience that just looks and sounds superb.
You’ll fight on a variety of WWII fronts, with many weapons to choose from and tactics to explore, in squads and as part of large-scale battles. Also, there are some nice single player missions to play as you get used to the game.
Hunt: Showdown
For a multiplayer offering that’s far more brutal and unforgiving but offers amazing rewards, check out Hunt: Showdown, which drops you in a gothic bayou populated by zombies and monsters. You’re thrown onto a map to find out where a high-value monster is, and must kill and extract it while other teams work to hunt down the same targets.
With an impeccable sound design that makes every move a tactical decision, and a shot that can kill you with a single bullet, it’s one of the most engaging experiences in gaming and won’t be for everyone. However, if you sink in some time, you will discover a cult classic.
Unknown 4
A much more relaxing time can be spent with the great Uncharted 4, a daring tale of family and regret that brings Nathan Drake’s book to a close. While you also spend a lot of time climbing and exploring, there’s also a great shooter here with third-person action that’s fast and responsive.
You’ll battle your way through areas with a variety of powerful weapons, battling enemies and dodging their explosives, while seeing some of the most beautiful locations in the game.
Call of Duty: Warzone
Warzone is a phenomenon that caught us along with tens of millions of other players, not least because it’s the best free-to-play experience Call of Duty has ever offered. While the standalone games offer fun campaigns and solid multiplayer, we prefer Warzone’s missions, where a battle royale format rules everything.
Earning a win is so challenging and requires so much careful preparation that you’ll experience a high that not much else in gaming can match, and the cross-platform support means you can enjoy it with your friends, even if they’re on Xbox or PCs are .
Metro Exodus
The Metro series has grown in strength, and the third in its lineup is its best yet, with far more expansive levels, a bit of non-linearity thrown in for good measure, and a heartfelt and well-delivered story that hits hard at times.
Below that is rock-solid first-person shooting, with weapons that demand quite a bit of you in terms of recoil control, but are super satisfying to use. They’re nice and ramshackle at times, too, and go well with the mood.
Far cry 6
The sixth Far Cry game doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but instead follows the formula of Far Cry 3, which has been slowly improved over time. On a Cuban island, you slowly topple a dictatorship by taking control of outposts and completing missions for local guerrilla fighters.
The story isn’t as memorable as you’d hope, but the action is frenetic and up-and-coming with plenty of variables to play with and a massive array of weapons to acquire and upgrade as you progress through the game. It’s basically just fun.
