introduction

Update June 26th: We received a retail-grade Galaxy A80 a few days ago, so we went back over our reviews and re-examined some of the issues we had with the earlier device we had for review. You can find some updates scattered here and there, and with that comes a new score – also a higher one.

Well, this really is an Infinity display – not Infinity-O, not Infinity-U, not Infinity-anything else. The Samsung Galaxy A80 has an all-screen face made possible by a nifty camera mechanism that pops up and rotates, allowing the same cameras to do double duty, front and rear. Something like that has done before, but not quite like this.

That’s not all – in addition to the two traditional cameras, a regular wide-angle and an ultra-wide-angle camera, the Galaxy A80 has a time-of-flight module for depth mapping. So not only should you get selfies with the quality of photos taken with a main camera, but you should also have advanced depth detection. Added to this is Live Focus videosnot just photos, and we can see the potential of the A80 in a certain demographic.

Pretty much everyone is likely to enjoy the large 6.7-inch SuperAMOLED display – it’s FullHD+ resolution in an even larger-than-usual 20:9 format (warning, Xperias) and offers plenty of screen real estate. The Snapdragon 730 also looks promising – Qualcomm’s latest version, which falls just short of the 800 series, has enough power and should be fairly efficient too.

Let’s hope that’s actually the case, as the battery in the A80 isn’t huge – the capacity has fallen victim to the adjustment of the moving parts and at 3,700mAh is lower than what even some smaller-screen phones have. Good thing there’s 25WUSB Power Delivery support, although it’s not really the same as a big power adapter.

However, we understand why Samsung couldn’t have gone bigger – the A80 is already quite hefty at 220g. Space was obviously at a premium, though, as the essentials have been scrapped – there’s no headphone jack, nor is there a microSD slot. boo

See what’s and isn’t present on the Galaxy A80.

Samsung Galaxy A80 unboxing

It’s one of those cases where we know what’s in the box but we don’t have one to show you, at least not yet. Expect the same 25W adapter we saw on the Galaxy A70, rated at 5V/3A and 9V/2.77A. It’s USB Power Delivery compliant, so it has a USB C output and the package also includes a C to C cable.

Since the headphone jack is gone, Samsung includes a set of USB-C earphones. The scope of delivery does not include a dongle. So if you want to use third-party 3.5mm headphones, you also need a third-party adapter. Some packages also include a protective sleeve, but it may be worth checking with your retailer or carrier to determine exactly what’s in the box.

Update June 26th: Here is a photo of the retail box with the contents matching what we have described above.
