introduction

Fondly reminiscent of the good old Sony Xperia Z Compact phones, the company is now launching the Xperia 5 – a reasonably sized flagship with Xperia 1 hardware. However, the display size of the Xperia 5 doesn’t really look like a compact smartphone. Last year’s Xperia XZ2 Compact featured a 5-inch screen, while this year’s Xperia 5 features a 6.1-inch OLED panel with an extra high 21:9 resolution.

On the other hand, in today’s era of giants, the Xperia 5’s 6.1-inch screen is actually smaller than most smartphones that launched in 2019. More importantly, like previous Xperia Compact devices, this one doesn’t compromise when compared to its bigger siblings. hardware-wise, that is.

It’s essentially an Xperia 1 with a much smaller footprint. The flagship Snapdragon 855 chipset still runs things, but this time it’s paired with 128GB of internal storage as the base configuration instead of 64GB, while the RAM is still 6GB. The most notable change in the tiny Xperia is the display – it’s not only shrinking in size but also in resolution. The 21:9 cinematic screen now has a resolution of 1080 x 2520 pixels (FHD+), which is a significant downgrade from the Xperia 1’s 1644 x 3840 pixel resolution. But maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
