Another year has passed and a whole bunch of devices have passed through our office. We completed more than 80 smartphone reviews in 2018 and what an exciting tech year it has been!
We’ve seen the infamous display notch rise in popularity and then dwindle to a hole in the screen. The fingerprint sensors under the display became more and more common and are finally usable. Face unlock has gained prominence throughout the year as the number of cameras on the back of phones increases. Fast charging has reached new and almost unbelievable heights. This year has seen many surprises – good and bad – and new trends have emerged that will continue to evolve throughout 2019.
Traditional smartphone makers have had a tough year due to pressure from more dynamic Chinese companies. New strategies were introduced – some brands rose while others fell.
We’ve enjoyed following the evolution of these trends while reviewing the most notable smartphone releases of the past year. We wrote down our observations and decided to close 2018 with an overview of the most interesting events.
