(Pocket-lint) – The Wizarding World has captured the imagination of fans around the world, but unlike some film franchises there’s no numbering to keep you on track, just titles.

Then you have the question of the Wizarding World films alongside the Harry Potter story – how exactly do these fit into the bigger picture?

Unlike some epic film franchises, Harry Potter’s story is sequential, so you must watch the films in order. That at least makes things consistent and there are major storylines running from first to last so any deviation will spoil the story or leave you confused.

However, we present you with two orders, the release order, which is the date the movies came out, and the chronological order in which those movies appeared on a Wizarding World timeline. One version contains spoilers. To avoid these if you haven’t seen the movies, click on the links to jump straight to the order you want.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone/Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

This is the beginning of the Harry Potter story where you first meet Harry as he goes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry set in 1991 – but the film was released in 2001. You’ll meet many of the main characters at Hogwarts, including the introduction of Lord Voldemort, Harry’s nemesis, with the storyline centered around the Philosopher’s Stone. This stone belonged to Nicholas Flamel, who you actually first meet in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The second book in the series and second film, the adventures at Hogwarts continue for Harry Potter and friends. Lord Voldemort gets stronger and things get a little darker as the kids get older. The film came out in 2002 but is set in 1992.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

There’s quite a change for the third film as we are introduced to Sirius Black (the prisoner) who is a huge influence on Harry’s story. But it’s really the introduction of the Dementors, who see things darker, with a growing sense of danger. At the same time, the story of the muggle family loses meaning as Harry embraces his fate. The film is set in 1993 but was released in 2004.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The Goblet of Fire is a pivotal moment in the story, taking the characters into their teenage years (Harry is about 14 in this film), introducing teenage themes like relationships, giving us the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament. The film begins in 1994 and was released in 2005.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

With Voldemort now a very real threat, the plot sees disruption at Hogwarts and the rise of the resistance against the dark lord – the Order of the Phoenix – and the general denial that there is a problem on the part of the Ministry of Magic. The film was released in 2007 and is set around 1995.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Set in 1996, the 2009 film is in many ways the story of Severus Snape and Albus Dumbledore, adding complexity to the Harry Potter story and following the heroes into even more dangerous skirmishes with the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

The last book in the Harry Potter story will become two films. They are closely related, with the first being released in 2010. Harry Potter and his friends decide to skip the final year of Hogwarts in pursuit of Voldemort and bring about his destruction. Much of the film revolves around the hunt and destruction of Horcruxes while Voldemort himself seeks the Deathly Hallows to become a Death Master.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

The second part of the Deathly Hallows was released in 2011 and continues the quests of the first part with a lot more action centered around Hogwarts, including the huge Battle of Hogwarts. It ties into various threads from previous films – like the Chamber of Secrets and much more Potterlore – and brings the story to an action-packed conclusion.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is named after a Hogwarts textbook of the same name written by Newt Scamander, the protagonist of the Fantastic Beasts films. The films are a prequel to the Harry Potter series as they contain many of the themes of the wizarding world but in a different story arc. In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander comes to New York in 1926 on behalf of a magizoologist, but is drawn into a magical conspiracy.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

The fantastical beasts take a back seat as the plot shifts to the pursuit of Grindelwald, who seeks to establish a wizarding order superior to the Muggles. We meet a young Dumbledore who makes a connection to the Harry Potter films, but many of the characters from the first Fantastic Beasts return, as do characters referenced in other films, such as Nicholas Flamel. The film is set in 1927 but was released in 2018, with a third installment set to complete the story sometime in the future.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The third part of the Fantastic Beasts story picks up where The Crimes of Grindelwald left off and sees a team of well-known heroes assembled to thwart Grindelwald’s plans. It stars Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald replacing Johnny Depp and sees the return of Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law. It saw a theatrical release on April 8, 2022 in the UK and Ireland, April 15 in the US; It’s due out on HBO Max on May 30, 2022.
