The next big Mario game on Switch is ready to unfold before our eyes: that’s right, we’re getting a new Paper Mario game titled The Origami King.
The first game in the Paper Mario series since 2016’s Color Splash for the Wii U is due out this summer after its surprise reveal in May 2020. Here’s what we know about the new Mario RPG.
When is the release date of Paper Mario: The Origami King?
Paper Mario is set to release globally on Switch on July 17th, 2020. You can pre-order it now from Nintendo, Amazon or Game in the UK, or from Nintendo, Amazon or Best Buy in the US.
Unsurprisingly, The Origami King will be a Switch exclusive, so you’ll need to own either the Switch or the cheaper Switch Lite console to play it.

The only trailer of the new Paper Mario so far is the announcement trailer that Nintendo released in mid-May, but it gives a pretty good idea of what to expect:
What to expect from The Origami King
The good news first: Nintendo is touting this as a return to the classic Paper Mario RPG format following the divergence of Sticker Star and Color Splash, both of which were a bit more action-heavy.
This time, Paper Mario faces off against Olly, the Origami King, who stole Princess Peach’s castle. Mario must follow five massive streamers pouring out of the castle to unfold the storyline, visiting a forest spring, an autumn mountain, a ninja mansion, an underground sewer and a desert oasis.
Nintendo followed the announcement trailer with a 5 minute gameplay focused video that does a great job of explaining roughly how The Origami King will play:
Mario is accompanied by the origami creature Olivia, who can use her paper folding powers to help solve puzzles and give Mario some nifty fighting abilities like the “1000x Arms”. Other supporting characters include an amnesiac Bob-omb, a history professor Toad, and even the normally evil witch Kamek.
Combat is turn-based and uses a new ring combat system, with various rings emanating from Mario in the center. At the start of each battle, you have a limited amount of time and movement to reposition enemies by rotating the rings and trying to line up enemies or cluster them together so you can hit as many targets as possible with each attack.
Leap attacks hit multiple enemies in a row, while the hammer knocks down a few. Other attack options we’ve seen so far include the Fire Flower, POW Block, and Tanuki Tail, but you can bet there are more to come.
Each of the five streamers is guarded by a member of the Legion of Stationery: fierce bosses particularly good at flattening paper. This includes a 12-piece set of crayons, a giant of rubber bands and a roll of duct tape – bitter enemies indeed.
Boss fights also look a little different with it boss in the middle of the rings, not Mario. Instead of rotating the rings to position enemies, you have to rotate them to create a path for Mario to follow in order to reach the boss in the center via as many power-ups as possible.
Outside of combat, there are tons of mini-games and side quests, including dogfights, ax throwing, and more. There are also the inevitable collectibles: hidden chests, holes in the paper landscape that need fixing, and lost toads folded into other shapes.
