introduction

One of the first phones with five cameras on board, and still the only one with four on the back several months after the announcement – it’s the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018). We wanted to find out how well the impressive spec sheet translates to real-world performance.

Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) in review

Sitting on top of the always confusing Galaxy A series, the A9 leaves no doubt that it’s the best-equipped of the bunch. It’s got more cameras than any of them, of course – it adds a telephoto module to the A7’s regular/wide/deep configuration. There is “only” a single camera on the front – the 24-megapixel selfie shooter does not have its own depth sensor.

It’s not just the number of cameras that sets the A9 apart from the other mid-range Galaxy models of 2018 – it also has the most powerful chipset. Its Snapdragon 660 outperforms its smaller brethren’s Exynos chipsets, falling only behind the recently announced A8s (which lack a year designation, so it doesn’t really count).

The largest display in the A-series is also found on the A9 (2018), whose 6.3-inch diagonal is only beaten by the pesky A8s that came out when we did the A9’s review, so we had to here and because rephrase something there. Anyway, the A9 (2018) feature set continues with more RAM than you could possibly need, 128GB of storage that you can also expand with a dedicated microSD slot, and ample battery capacity, complete with Samsung’s fast charge – yes, the A9 spec sheet ticked all the right boxes.

  • Various: Rear-mounted fingerprint reader; Samsung Pay; single speaker on the bottom; 3.5mm jack.

Well, we would have preferred Android Pie to last year’s Oreo, but in a world where the Note9 doesn’t yet have v9.0 of the operating system and the S9 only got it as a post-Christmas present, we didn’t actually expect it from the A9 of all places.

And while we usually avoid thinking in value-for-money terms before rating a phone on its merits, the number Samsung is asking for the Galaxy A9 (2018) raised a few eyebrows in the office as soon as the phone came through the door. We’ll quickly run through the lab test results, but not before we’ve looked at the A9’s design.
