The lockdown of western populations has been bad news for many industries, but it may have been good for gambling, as a number of recent reports highlight huge growth in gambling across the board.

The most striking numbers come from Unity, which reports a 46% growth in daily active players on PC and Mac compared to early 2019. Amusingly, the gap in spike play flattened out by 63% over the weekend after lockdown began in early March. In the first week of May, people were actually playing more during the week than at the weekend.

Unity analyzed activity on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android games made with its Unity software, in addition to other mobile games that power its monetization system.

Mobile gaming also saw a surge as people who don’t typically play turned to their phones for entertainment. According to Unity, mobile play saw a more modest 17% year-over-year increase, but that translates into 84% more app installs than normal.

A little less clear is where mobile gamers spend their time. Unity says that so-called “mid/hardcore” mobile games saw 39% more engagement than usual, while “commuter” apps with shorter gaming sessions actually fell 7% after a brief spike in early March.

On the other hand, a related report from Adjust in March 2020 showed a 72% growth in gameplay sessions for so-called “hyper casual” games — though that growth quickly tailed off through April, more consistent with Unity’s numbers.

It’s not just people playing games. A study of 3,617 users of the Gener8 browser extension found that traffic to Twitch was 179% higher than usual at its peak, with a 98% increase among people actually playing games.

The big question is if any of this will last, or if all of these newfound players will drop the habit once they’re allowed back into the pub. Both Unity and Adjust found peaks in March and April, which fell again in May. So it’s possible that many new players have already decided it’s not for them.
