Vivo is no stranger to experimentation. Looking at BBK Electronics Corporation’s admirably broad lineup, it’s easy to see that it’s turning to brands like OnePlus, Oppo, and more recently Realme for competitive device offerings in the flagship, mid-range, and budget segments of the market. Vivo, on the other hand, has a certain experimental history and spirit. And nothing really embodies that better than the “NEX” family of devices. Now with another eye-catching and intriguing member in its ranks.
The NEX Dual Display is nothing short of original, yet surprisingly easy to understand at a conceptual level. In more ways than one, it’s the culmination of vivo’s pre-existing efforts to shape a fresh, new, and more functional mobile design. One that clearly stems from a desire to maximize screen real estate and solve the problem of the selfie camera and sensor in a more elegant, notch-free way.
The original NEX S and NEX A pursued the same thing with the periscope camera module. This time, the proposed solution is a little different and more ambitious, using an impressive 5.49-inch Super AMOLED second panel. Nevertheless, the goal posts are in their usual place.

Unique and surprising, but clearly built on foundation rather than in isolation, the new NEX Dual Display also incorporates vivo’s fingerprint reader technology and the space savings it brings. Better still, it’s a latest-generation sensor – the same as the OnePlus 6T. One that’s actually reliable and fast enough to be used in real life, making it a marked improvement over the original NEX handset.
This is actually a recurring theme with the NEX Dual Display. In more ways than one, it seems exuberant and even unnecessary at first glance. Look a little closer, though, and most of the tech and design elements are starting to make sense as the next logical iteration of in vivo’s goal of an all-display device.
That being said, there’s no denying that the company’s design and engineering teams turned the knob to 11 and basically ripped it out for most aspects of the NEX Dual Display. In doing so, he enters directly into experimental territory. Maybe it even gets the status of a “Tech Showcase”. But just because the NEX DD isn’t likely to get into the hands of many users doesn’t really make it any less interesting. But first, let’s take a quick look at the sales packaging and its contents. The vivo NEX Dual Display comes in a beautiful two-piece box that also includes a bottom sliding compartment. It’s definitely above average in quality and presentation, but far from the most elaborate packaging we’ve seen out there. Mind you, that’s a good thing in our opinion, as overpaying for a box is generally a waste of money at the end of the day. The phone comes in its own mount and is decently protected for shipping so no complaints.
In terms of accessories, vivo has included a pair of decent and nice looking earphones. These have an in-line mic, so technically it’s a nice speakerphone. Also in the box – a very thick protective case, color coded to your device. So either blue or red. Probably the former as red is currently strictly restricted to China and even harder to come by.
As you can probably imagine, the bumper looks pretty odd. It merely covers the phone’s bezel and does its best to stretch out some thickness to flow over the sides and protect the display pair when the phone is left on a surface. Since Vivo wasn’t trying to cover up the main attraction – the second display – the back of the case is just as open as the front.
Still, the extra grip the bumper offers is much appreciated, as the NEX Dual Display has got to be one of the slipperiest phones to come by the office in a while.
Last but not least, there is also a wall charger in the box, as well as a white USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable. It’s actually the same 22.5W unit that came with the original vivo NEX S.
