(Pocket-lint) – James Cameron’s first Avatar sequel is set to hit theaters in December 2022, and judging by the new teaser trailer it’s set to look even more spectacular than the original.

Avatar: The Way of Water reunites Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington as Neytiri and Jake. This time, however, they are joined by their children as the film focuses on a new fight that affects the entire Sully family.

Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang also step into their roles and the film will once again be shown in 3D.

The original film was credited with starting a 3D revolution upon its release in 2009, with Cameron being a supporter of the format. Although many films are still offered in 3D in theaters, revenues have been small compared to their 2D equivalents and television manufacturers have largely abandoned the technology in recent television models.

It is therefore unlikely that Disney will offer the 3D version on home entertainment platforms, and certainly not Disney+.

That being said, it could make a visit to the theater even more special considering this may be the only time it’s possible in the format the director intended.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in the US on December 16, 2022.
