(Pocket-lint) – Google Maps AR navigation was first shown off at Google I/O in 2018 and teased in early 2019 before becoming more widely available in August 2019.

Originally called Google Maps AR, the system now appears as Live View on compatible devices, but it’s the same overall function, just labeled as Live View in Google Maps on your phone.

What is Google Maps AR/Live View?

Google Maps AR or Live View is designed to allow you to use augmented reality to help you navigate while walking. What does that mean? It uses the camera on the back of the phone to identify where you are and overlays direction and details on the display rather than just presenting you with a map.

The AI recognizes what you can see, while the GPS helps you pinpoint your position on the map. Ultimately, Google Maps Live View helps get around the problem of not knowing which direction to go – as the AR can point in the right direction so you’re headed in the right direction.

How do I find Google Maps Live View?

The Live View feature is easy to find on Google Maps, but only works with walking directions:

  • Find a destination that you want to walk to.
  • Make sure you selected Walk.
  • Tap the Live View button at the bottom of the page.
  • Tilt your phone up so you’re looking through to see the AR view.

How do I use Google Maps Live View?

Once you click the button, the best route will be calculated as usual, with graphs showing you the Live View AR system is working. The instructions begin with the normal voice instructions, but you’ll be prompted to lift your phone to use the augmented reality features. If you hold your phone flat you won’t see this view, but you can force it by clicking the pointer icon in the bottom left corner.

Google Maps attempts to identify your surroundings by scanning what your camera sees and comparing it to Street View imagery. This is done at the top of the screen, while normal walking directions are shown at the bottom of the screen.

If you’re pointing the wrong way, Google Maps AR will either show you a giant arrow directing you in a different direction, or give you a small ad at the edge of the screen. Wave your phone to see what the indicator is pointing you to and you’re good to go.

Google Maps Live View shows you street names and distances in AR, as well as important turns to help you stay on the right path.

To see the AR instructions, however, you’ll need to pick up your phone and point it at the road ahead – and you can’t walk like that. You will get a warning to put down your phone. If you don’t, Maps will blank the screen until you do.

If there is no Google Street View in your area, AR navigation will not work.

When was Google Maps Live View introduced?

Google Maps Live View was introduced in 2019 for phones supporting ARkit (Apple) or ARCore (Android). We’ve seen it mostly on Pixel devices and some other Android phones don’t support it. You’ll probably have to check every single phone to see if you have compatibility.
