introduction

Last year’s Galaxy Note9 wasn’t the big upgrade everyone expected, and it was even seen as a boring upgrade over the Note8. Still, the phone was well-received for following the Note series’ mantra of no compromises. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke, right? However, this year’s Galaxy Note10 and Note10+ are a big departure from what we’re used to from Samsung’s flagships, which in turn has sparked some controversy.

And that’s largely due to the 3.5mm jack. Yes, that’s right, Samsung seems to be one of the last OEMs to abandon this ship, and it’s going jackless with both phones – the vanilla Note10 and the plus-size version. Thankfully, the Note10+ keeps the microSD card slot.

That being said, we expect the Note10+ to be a significant upgrade in almost every way – battery life, display, camera performance, charging speed, and traditionally the S Pen also brings a few new features to the table.

  • Battery: 4,300mAh, 45W fast charge via Power Delivery 3.0 (25W charger included).
  • Various: microSD card slot with up to 1 TB support; Fast wireless Qi/PMA charging 15W; Power bank/reverse wireless charging 9W; S Pen stylus; Ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the display; NFC; FM radio (US and Canada only); stereo speakers; Samsung DeX support (desktop experience).

As you can see, one of the most noticeable changes is the screen size and camera cutout. Samsung has been able to fit a fairly large screen into the body thanks to the curved edges and trimmed bezels, and OCD geeks will be pleased to see the punch-hole camera centered rather than pushed to the edges like the S10 series. However, the question is, is it really better than a standard notch?

And while the Note10+ has disappointed some die-hard Note fans (at least according to our polls), there’s no denying that the handset is an absolute powerhouse, keeping up with the trends of 2019, if not necessarily the right ones. Before jumping to any conclusions, let’s see how it performs in our tests and in everyday use.

Unpacking the Samsung Galaxy Note10+

The phone comes in a premium looking black box that includes almost everything you would expect. We say almost because the USB-C to audio jack dongle isn’t visible, meaning you’ll have to buy it separately.

Otherwise, you’ll be greeted with a USB-C to USB-C cable that supports Power Delivery 3.0, along with a 25W charger that again conforms to the PD 3.0 standard. There’s also a pair of great-sounding AKG earbuds with braided cables – a nice touch as always.

Our only complaint would be the lack of a 3.5mm audio dongle. For the asking price you would expect a $5 dongle, but it is what it is. Oh, and if you want to take full advantage of the highest charging speeds possible, you’ll have to shell out for the faster 45W charging brick.
